Schlafly and Anheuser-Busch roll out beer bread kits - St. Louis Magazine

Whether it's a beginner's sourdough loaf or a pleasantly salty foccacia, bread making has been high on many people's aspirational activities list during quarantine—so much so that finding yeast and flour these days may take a little extra detective work. A number of local beer brands have jumped on the bread making bandwagon with kits that take the heat off—no kneading or spending hours waiting for the dough to rise. Even if you're an experienced baker, beer bread kits are essentially the happy hour of bread making, the warm, fluffy equivalent of kicking back with a cold one.

Anheuser-Busch's beer bread kits, newly available to buy online, only need one can of Budweiser to complete the recipe for one loaf. Available in Classic, Basil Parmesan, Cheesy Garlic, and Cheddar Bacon varieties, each kit retails for $6.95.

“Bread is having a moment,” Kathy Sattler, Head of Beer Category & Community at Anheuser-Busch told St. Louis Magazine. “As we are still trying to connect with our consumers through this [lockdown], we're like, 'let's get our breads out there.'”

Sattler said customers coming through the tour center would have been able to buy the bread kits, but with the tour center temporarily closed due to the lockdown, their team shifted to e-commerce, with all four flavors now on shopbeergear.com.

“The breads were always just kind of in the background, but now they're the star,” Sattler said. “People are spending more time at home, they're definitely spending more time with family, and people are using the kitchen more. They're not eating out, they're not going over to friend's houses, so we thought, what can we do that's fun and what can we do that's easy to make?”

Of course, the kits considerably streamline the breadmaking process, but beer bread in general can be a good way to ease in for those new to the craft (and who want to gain some Instagram points). The carbonation from the beer—not yeast—acts as a leavening agent that contributes to a light, fluffy texture common to beer bread, similar to soda bread.

Schlafly is offering a Pale Ale Beer Bread Kit as part of its curbside pickup offerings; each comes with two bottles of Pale Ale, a dry mix, and baking instructions. For those who want to get even more creative in the kitchen, Schlafly recently published a recipe for a Hoppy Wheat Honey Bread, which calls for one bottle of its Hoppy Wheat Ale, part of the Hoptic Visions sampler pack that Schlafly released in March.

Of course, there are dozens of beer bread recipes online for those who care to get more adventurous with other beers they have on hand, but VinePair suggests to steer clear of bitter or roasty styles and instead go for ones that are lighter in flavor, such as pilsners or Belgian-style beers with a slight sweetness or fruity tones for more of a dessert bread. German wheat beer, porters, and brown ales work well, too.
