When it comes to showing proof her Z-cup breasts are real, controversial teacher Kayla Lemieux says the public is going to have to take her word for it.

Lemieux, an Oakville shop teacher, attracted international attention after showing up for class dressed in a wig, tights, glasses and what were widely reported as prosthetic Z-cup breasts.

But the teacher at Oakville Trafalgar High School told The Toronto Sun that she suffers from a condition known as gigantomastia, and added she is not transgender, but was born intersex.

Lemieux said a doctor diagnosed her rare condition, adding she was told being born with  “XX chromosomes” and a “hormone sensitivity to estrogen has caused it.”

Lemieux said she did not have anything in writing to support what she told the Sun.

“The diagnosis is based on verbal discussions I have had with my doctor,” Lemieux told me in an email. “I never requested a note or letter of these findings. I don’t have anything I can give you.”

And Lemieux indicated it’s offensive to even be asked.

“I don’t think women, in general, have formal diagnosis of their breast size,” said Lemieux. “I also personally consider breast size irrelevant … I decided to break my silence and put my name next to my statements, and now I am being asked to provide proof.  I really don’t know how to help you with that.”

Questions about the teacher came to light after the New York Post published images it claimed were Lemieux without a wig, makeup, breasts and other accoutrements. Lemieux told the Sun that picture was “not me.”

The Halton District School Board has yet to comment, but Students First Ontario, a parents group, said Lemieux’s comments may mean she will be able to get around any future professional dress code since real breasts are not clothing.

Lemieux has indicated that by speaking, she hopes there will be less fascination with her and people will move on.

I consider myself to be a private citizen,” said Lemieux. “I never felt I was obligated to reveal personal details about myself based on special interest from media. And I never wanted any attention … I am hoping that me sharing this information will demystify me and give people a better understanding of the person I am.”

That person, said Lemieux, is someone born “intersex” and at age 39, had large breasts grow as a result of a rare condition.
