Lafayette,LA - A diagnosis no one once to ever hear they have, for one woman, she has heard it twice.. you have cancer.
"I've always had a very very strong faith and that is what gets me through," expressed Natalie Miguez.
Stuck at home due to the 2016 flooding in Lafayette. She remembered to do a self- breast exam where she noticed a lump. Days later, she got the news that she feared it was stage-2 breast cancer. Her life began to change.
"I had a double mastectomy and then I had six months of chemo and then in August of 17, I went in remission."
Four years later, when at the age of 50, Miguez returned to her everyday life. Until June of 20, she started having back troubles. After reaching for it one day, she felt a lump. Her cancer was back.
"It was devasting. It was devasting. I remember my doctor telling me, I hate giving you this news. He told me upfront, it treatable, not curable.
After everything she'd been through, helping others is important to her, using her platform through facebook with the help of her husband, Team Miguez was created with the sole purpose of promoting self-breast exams.
"Any event that may be out there that we can go for just for exposure of handing out information on how to conduct a self breast exam or where to go for that. You know we're good for that. "
During the tough times, Miguez did not let breast cancer get her down because she had such a great support system there to keep her going.
"My husband, my kids, my family and here at work. they... I didn't have to worry about a thing. the pink ribbon divas. They are there for support. They are there to answer my questions. They are there to hear you rant and rave and cry. "
She says that one of the most significant pieces of advice she could have gotten from a friend going through breast cancer treatment was always stay hydrated.
"That lady helped me tremendously. I will never forget some of the things that she has taught me. I didn't have black fingernails, my skin was great. All these weird side effects sometimes they don't tell you about when you're going through chemo. "
Miguez says that she will continue to use her power to shine a light on the importance of doing self-breast exam. Doctors recommend regular mammograms for women over the age of forty but even earlier for women who have a family history of breast cancer. If early detection is caught early, the prognosis is often good.
